Transferring old posts :) This one from April of 2009
White and lilies are a tradition of this time in the liturgical calendar. I found directions on how to make a Paschel Candle for the Eastertide season on www.fisheaters.com and there were also some instructions as to the prayers and blessings of the candle in the mass prayer book. To create a Paschal Candle, purchase a large white candle, the height doesn't matter much. Carve across and then the symbol A for Alpha at the top, and the Omega symbol at the bottom. Place near the center the numbers for the current year. I painted the cross and letters after carving to make them stand out, red and silver were suggested on the web site listed above. Insert 5 pieces of incense or cloves to each end of the cross and the center; these represent the five wounds of Christ. The candle represents the Light of the World which is our resurrected Christ starting on Easter. The candle is lit nightly until the Feast of the Ascension. For more details on the prayers and for exact details in creating a Paschal Candle visit www.fisheaters.com under the Liturgical Calendar section of the web site.
